"Enumerate Device Win32_CDROM Drive fail!!!"

After a repair/reinstall of XP Pro SP2 on a newish SATA 2 HDD, the above
message appears and the DVD drives aren't recognised. Device Manager says
the drivers are corrupt. But the MS Wizard says they are the latest and are
OK. When I downloaded new firmware from Asus & Pioneer, Windows told me that
it couldn't run because there is no matching hardware! I can run both from a
second, IDE, HDD, but that has some other system problems. Help!

I'm trying to learn more about PC maintenance and enhancement after building
my current machine - not always easy!

You have done a good job of narrowing down the problem. Since it all works
with the IDE, you have to think the problem is the SATA driver. It's possible
there is no such 'better driver' out there, but I think you are probably
stuck with trying to find one.

Thanks. The latest device-specific Asus driver was released a few months
ago, it's the one I have installed, the one XP doesn't like, but won't let me
overwrite with a new download. I'm thinking of a clean XP Pro/SP2 install,
which should pick up the driver again, unless you can suggest anything
simpler. And I'll set a restore point as soon as everything functions!

Thanks, I'd already done that, no previous drivers, MS update says the one
installed is the latest, there seems to have only one driver released for
this recent model and I hadn't overwritten it. (Sigh.)
