Endless lists of software. in a.c.f

I won't mention names or pseudonyms but I've noticed that there are
people here who post sheer endless numbers of what lookes like
recommendations of programs.

<snip>

I can see your point, but in essence you're caught between a rock and
a hard place.
On the one hand the posting of links to freeware is pretty much what
this group is all about - and on the other hand it's always good to
have recommendations from people who have evaluated the programs.

But, the cycle has to start somewhere.

I would imagine few people diligently read all such posts - I
personally skip right over them unless something in the header catches
my eye, or I note several follow-ups.
On the other hand, posts made by some of the regulars ( such as SOS )
are generally well worth a read.

Don't forget too that even the simple act of cutting and pasting a
link takes some effort, let alone actually browsing for the links in
the first place.
I reckon that's a welcome addition to the NG, and a lot more in the
spirit of what it's all about... as opposed to the trolls, whingers,
pedants, backstabbers, pseudo-revolutionaries, sock puppets, and the
just plain disenfranchised.

REally? I thought most people recommend what they have used? Normally
along the lines I recommend ,x,y, , but i heard z (which is very popular)
is good too.

Programs get posted. Some of the adventurous try out what intrigues them.
People who DO try them can post their results in
Alt.Comp.Freeware.Discussion. That's what it is for isn't it.

Actually, I've seen post which annouces a discovery of a promising new
freeware, then encourages other people to try it..

E.g Website x has gimzo Y, which has feature z. Anyone tried it?

But... I have this feeling the original poster himself has not tried it,
but is waiting for an "All clear" from some regular :)

Proving nothing. The right answer is that this is unmoderated usenet,
people post anything they want. Some, like Tramp, post whatever they find,
useful or not. Some, like Blinky, trade what they think are clever one
liners with their buddies. Others love to play netcop and scold people for
top posting, or whatever. Others complain about the complainers. All part
of the charm of usenet. The solution to these annoyances is to drop them
all into the bozo bin where they can keep each other company. This makes
the group quite pleasant to read.

Most of us lurk over there I assume.

Actually, they should post them here in a.c.f. Nobody knows why
a.c.f.d is there, a.c.f is already for discussion of freeware, and
a.c.f.d has no charter and is not carried by as many servers as a.c.f
is.

They do. But *this* thread is about "catalog" posts: "Hey, here are 50
new links. I know nothing about any of the programs." It's about the
nonrecommended links.

Proving nothing. The right answer is that this is unmoderated usenet,

Proving exactly what was asserted and then questioned: that many more
have thanked Tramp for his postings than have complained about them.
That's the point, that was the challenge with respect to "data
supporting" a contention. The point had nothing to do about your silly
Usenet freedomfighter bullshit. Apply a few basic reading comprehension
skills to all those letters and words in front of you, and they might
(far from a guarantee) make some kind of sense.

Google Groups shows "about 188" hits in this group for the phrase
"thanks blinky". Sure, there's some repetition, as posts are quoted.
On the other hand, that's not a mandatory phrase for showing
appreciation when someone has provided assisstance. "thank you blinky",
for instance, adds 23 more hits.

Compare and contrast the same search on "thanks sli".

Neatness counts. Show your work.

(Nah, I'll make it simple. For sli, the return is "about 3" -- and
they're all from the same thread, back in February.)

Consider the situation where someone comes across a site or program which is
not of interest to them, but which they consider would be of interest to
other members of the group. I think that in such cases it is perfectly
justified to post details. I usually note such sites or programs and include
brief details in my monthly "Useful Sites" posts, indicating where
appropriate any programs which I have downloaded and recommend. Filters are
available where needed.

Oh though are okay imho. As long as it's clear that is what it is.It
would be totally different to recommend those software to other people in
response to a specific post asking for recommendations without a
disclaimer.

I personally might find such announcements useful, since I dont spend all
my time googling for new freeware.

Still admittedly by splitting everything up, the posts sure look like
spam. Some of the subjects like "3 small programs" are not very
descriptive anyway and most of the subjects dont tell me anything, might
as well combine them.

Well spam are generally a string of one posts with similar subjects and
no replies. Your postings generally draw no answers. That's why i said it
looks like spam.

Well that maybe so, but the situation i'm talking about is when the
finder of the app is really interested, but too cautious (fear of
spyware, time spent uninstalling, too good to be true etc) , and waits
for someone else to test it :)

Not even close to what spam is.

1. My posts are about one broad subject and that is freeware. Which this
newsgoup is about.

2. My posts are about different kinds of freeware (html, audio, video
etc) programs. which all fall under the umbrella of freeware. Which is of
course on topic for this newsgroup.

3. Lack of replies to not make it spam. They are still on topic.

4. I don't cross post to other newsgroups generally.

5. I don't post about comercial products.

Well that's not how I do it. If I am interested in a program I download
it and try it out. :)

Quit over-reacting. I said it *looks* like spam, I never said it's spam.

Right. It's more like a flooding. A little flooding of on-topic info fine.
Some day, someone will find a great program in your posts and will be
thankful.

I'm not showing off. I'm trying to give someone who *doesn't* really
contribute a clue about what real participation is.

Might want to try my system. I have a permanent killfile entry to
ignore his *original* posts, but not subsequent posts to the
threads, even those by him, if there are any. This way, I still
see the few posts of his that generate actual discussion -- it's
only the catalogs (both of the "one huge" and "many small"
varieties) that are killed.
Blinky, may I have a look at that filter? I think I will try something
similar in Xnews. Fa'afetai.
