DVD burner starts burning to DVD-R, then stops

I have a new Toshiba with Vista and DVD Super Multi. I've never had a DVD
burner before, so this is new for me. When I try to burn document files to a
DVD-R (drag and drop into the burner) it starts and seems to operate
normally. When I get it started on a large folder it begins copying to DVD,
then gets "stuck" - it stops making its writing noises and doesn't progress
in the file copying. Eventually I have to try to cancel, at which point it
freezes up and I end up having to reboot. When I check the DVD after that,
it is blank, even if I had copied some files and closed it and then started
copying again before it got stuck.

Check that the DVDs you bought are compatible with the burner. +R and -R and
discs of either type from the various manufacturers are all somewhat
different from each other and they don't all work equally well in all
burners. If the disc doesn't take the initial formatting properly the data
can't be written onto it. The activity you saw might have been Windows
filling the buffers (or disk cache) prior to trying to burn the files onto
the disc.. then stalling when the actual transfer couldn't proceed.
