Drive Image or Cloning Software

Is there any freeware Drive Imaging or Cloning software available?

I have just bought a new big hard drive, and want to avoid having to set
everything up all over again.

Partition Saving

Overview:

Partition Saving is a DOS program that is used to save, restore and
copy hard-drive, partitions, floppy disk and DOS devices. With this
program you could save all data on a partition to a file (such as you
could save this file on a CD for example). Then if something goes
wrong, you can completely restore the partition from the backup file.
You no longer have to reinstall every piece of software from scratch.
All you have to do is restore the partition from the backup file and
then update any software that was modified since the backup was
created. Note: beware of software which installs or modifies files on
multiple partitions (e.g. Windows programs which update the registry or
DLLs that may be on other partitions). If one partition is saved or
restored, you must include others (otherwise, inconsistencies could
prevent software from running). Partition Saving is able to compress
data (using the gzip compression algorithm) and split it up into
several files (e.g. if you need to save a 2 Gb partition onto a CD,
this can be done by compressing it and, if necessary, splitting it up
into 650 Mb files). Most partition types are supported. In the case of
FAT (12, 16 and 32), ext2 and NTFS partitions, you can choose between
saving all sectors or occupied sectors only.

Usually new hard drives come with software to allow you to transfer the
entire contents to the new one. Look in the box for a disk or go to
the website of the manufacturer.

If the drive is over 137GB, make damn sure your BIOS can support it, and
if you are running Windows 2000, make sure you have Service Pack 4
installed, and if Windows XP, Service Pack 1 and preferably 2.

There is a 137GB limit on older OS's (DOS is a joke in this case), so
any imaging utility you use has to be able to access what you want to
save - and when it restores it, it will only restore what it saved. Most
of them can't enlarge partitions on restore. The rest of your space will
have be set up using a partition manager that can work with large
drives.

Believe me, I know - I had a HUGE system crash that trashed my dual-boot
Windows 2000 and XP system a couple weeks ago caused by just moving some
partitions that suddenly crossed the 137GB limit on my 160GB Western
Digital drive. I was dual-booting on that drive for a YEAR with no
problems - but as soon as a partition crossed that 137GB limit, BAM!

Took me a week to discover a little-known Microsoft Knowledgebase
article that explained that Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 can't read
the partition table correctly on "some" hard drives...LOL...

I guess you forgot "homework" ?

A partition over 137 on a 160 ?? Why ?

It wasn't ONE partition - I have a number of partitions on the drive.
This one (and the one before it) crossed over the boundary.

Otherwise, what's the point of having 160GB if you can only use 137?

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products
that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first
corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3. Important Although support for
48-bit LBA is included in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and later,
it is still necessary to create the registry change that is described in
the "Resolution" section of this article.
