avi to mpg converter

Does anyone know of a freeware avi to mpg converter that works? Any
help would be gratefully appreciated. I looked on the web but can't
find anything that works correctly.

I have used 3 Canon cameras, A300, Ixus 40 and Ixus 700.
All of these can deliver .avi videoclips.
IrfanView cannot show the .avi videoclips directly.

But, I have simply renamed the files from .avi to .mpg,
and now even IrfanView can show the videoclips without problems.

(Windows 2000 and Windows XP)
