This problem is not unique to xxcopy. The vast majority of freeware
programs will have problems backing up some system files. The problem
occurs because some of the system files are in use by the system, and
the program can't get a lock on it to make a copy.
To my mind, this isn't really a problem anyway, because system files are
such a vexed issue that I never attempt to recover them in the event of
a catastrophe. Think of it as God's way of saying that it was time to
tidy up your hard drive anyway.

This looks like a nice place to tag on. Something got to my XP setup
around Wednesday. The Explorer quit working and even a full DOS
window (command.com) would not work. This is an XP Pro partition
using NT file system...

After spending two days trying to figure out what got to me and how I
threw up my arms, loaded the most current Windows Ultimate Boot CD
that I have and booted up to save my data files. Like presto! I copied
them to another drive.

I then formatted C: and fired up DrvImagerXP from the boot CD and
started restoring a clean partition I had saved previously. I can
finally say that the program rocks! This is the first opportunity I've
had to check out the actual restore capabilities of the program.

I found my WUTools directory and saved it to another partition
beforehand. I'm reinstalling all of the updates that I've accumulated
to date right now. This alone is very valuable to the dialup guy!

All in all, I have only AntiVir, Spybot, and Spyware Blaster that will
require further updating.

I cannot overestimate the value of these programs! Bodacious!

I would be looking at, I dunno, 20-30 hours of painfully slow critical
updates had I not had WUTools. DrvImagerXP made it a cinch to replace
the partition with a crystal clean one with all of my settings done.
The WUB CD made the whole image creation\restore possible.

I'll get links later, I'm about to have to reboot for the updates
installation...

I have to second the use of some form of imager and a second drive
which are now so cheap.

A few weeks ago my C drive simply died. Wasn't even identified on boot
up. Went and bought a replacement drive, booted using the imager boot
disc and it restored perfectly in a couple of hours. I then simply
added several data directories using Karen's Replicator and as you
suggest update Ad-aware, Spybot and AVG and I was in exactly the
state as prior to this major failure within a few hours.
