does Defender stay resident only when minimized?

With the previous version of MS Antispyware beta 1, I could close it and an
icon would appear in my system tray showing it was still resident. Now if I
close Defender, no icon appears in the system tray from what I can tell, and
it looks as though it is no longer resident providing active protection -
whereas if I just minimize it I assume it is. Do I have to keep it minimized
to provide resident protection? Thanks

Remove the "-hide" from the MSASCui.exe Run key and the icon should show
unless you have had XP itself hide it.
