Do I Need These Updates?

I'm not very selective, so can someone explain what's important for these
updates?

1. Update for Windows XP (KB896344)

2. Cumulative Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP (KB887797)

3. Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1*

4. Update for Windows XP HighMAT Support in CD Writing Wizard (KB831240)


*I have a software that needs this one, so should I install this one?

There is nothing wrong with installing .Net Framework.
If installing it caused a problem, it's likely you had other
problems before you installed it.

Many software developer's are using .Net Framework
and you'll eventually need it to install those applications.

Example: ATI requires the installation of .Net Framework
before you can install the latest ATI video drivers.

They are all optional updates so they are not needed. They may be needed if
your pc is affected. Read the notes and decide for yourself. If your
software that uses .NET 1.1 is working then you already have it installed
and this should not be showing up. There are some security updates for .NET
1.1 that are in critical updates and should be installed. If you install any
of these updates make sure to check for critical updates again after
installing the optional updates. AS OE is part of Windows and may be called
from other programs I recommend doing the OE update.

(perhaps unjustly) in the OP's question, I would have to agree with Carey
that all these updates should be installed.

The first update may be needed if the OP wants to use FAST to migrate to a
64 bit version of Windows.

The last three add important improvements to Windows. The .net framework is
required by an increasing number of applications and drivers.

With all due respect Ted, Optional means just that optional.

If a program or driver needs .NET it is usually installed as part of the
program's installation or a link is provided to download it. Personally I do
not install it until it is needed. It has some signicant security flaws
unless the critical updates are done. The installation doesn't warn you of
this. If the OP is as unsophisticated as you say it is unlikely they will be
upgrading to 64 bit Windows. So far I have not seen any devices that need
HighMAT support.

Everyone has their own opinions about Windows Updates. I prefer not to
install something until it is needed. It is kind of like the current thread
on leaving your pc on 24/7

That is to be expected. Your original question was what are they and are
they needed. It sounds like in your case they may not be needed but
installing them shouldn't cause a problem.
