This message used to appear when upgrading Win98 to WinXP. It can also
occur when a hard drive fails to access. Are you getting any unusual
clicking sounds? It could possibly be WinXP trying to access information
from the memory read/write cache, so don't count a memory problem out of the
equation.

If you have added or changed memory, then try putting it back to the
original configuration to see if this cures the problem. Try running
MemTest from http://www.hcidesign.com/memtest. The free version may show up
a memory problem.

Also, check your startup folder to see if anything has changed there. There
are occasions (rare though they may be) when something added here can cause
problems.

It could be almost anything, but memory is cerainly a possibility. Get
a copy of Memtest86 (free, do a google search) and test your memory

See http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm and click 7b in the left panel
At a guess you have special drivers for the hard disk, like VIA 4 in 1
or Intel IAA that are damaged. So see if you can boot with hitting F8
as BIOS info goes to black and taking Safe Mode. If that gets in get a
fresh download of such drivers via another machine and reinstall them
