Disappearing Task Bar Button

When downloading a file from the Internet a button appears in the task
bar which indicates something like
"xx% of file downloaded"
Previously when the download was completed the message changed to
"Download Completed".
I could then click on the button and a message would ask if I wanted to
open the file.
Now, it starts as above, but when the download is completed the button
disappears completely. I then have to use Windows Explorer to locate and
open the file.
Any idea on why the button now disappears, and how can I return the
everything to "normal".
I have windows XP, SP2 plus all updates. There is nothing I can think of
that I have done, no new installations or setups, no deletions, etc.
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide. Much
appreciated.
Brian.

Hello Brian,

In Tools => Internet Options => Advanced tab, do you have the 'Notify
when downloads complete' box checked?
