Disappearing printers in AD

We're running a large domain with 2000 and 2003 servers. Every once in a
while, the shared printers in some or all of our branches will just disappear
from Active Directory entirely. Users can still connect to the printer
through UNC name, and we can restore any given printer to AD by disabling and
then reenabling sharing for each missing printer.

Usually only a printer or two will go missing, but occasionaly we'll lose
hundreds of printers. Users can still print to the printers that they've
already added through AD, but new searches will come up empty.

I haven't come across any articles about this issue, and the event viewer
doesn't show any relative entries. Has anyone encountered this before? Any
suggestions?

I wonder if it has something to do with the printers being pruned.
