Management has asked us to disable the ability to write to a cd in win2000
and xp. Any idea if this is possible and if so how?

Windows2000 does not have native ability to burn CD's. As for XP you
might try asking in the XP hardware group and you may prevent it in
Active Directory but I have not researched it.

I realize that win2000 doesn't have the native ability to burn CD's, but from
a hardware prospective you can burn CD's in win2000 with the proper software.
I have to disable this from a hardware prospective.

?? If you don't have control over what programs they install on the PC
you have no control over the PC. Only removing the drive and
disconnecting the USB headers is the only sure method. And then padlock
the box shut.

you shouldnt be putting a cd burner in a system if you want to make sure it
can never burn CDs.

its like installing a Sound card but trying to figure out how to make it
never play music.

disable the device in Windows. it will make it unusble.

then install a non-burning CD-ROM into the system.
