Direct connection via crossover

Can a laptop running on Windows XP Professional, w. a
built-in wireless miniPCI Card and a network RJ-45 port,be
directly connected via crossover cable to another laptop
running on Windows 98, with a 10/100 ethernet card and an
RJ-45 connector? If so, how (please)? I know the network
wizard tells you a serial cable can be used, but can it be
done with the crossover cable?

It *must* be done with a crossover cable, or a pair of regular
patch cables with a hub or switch or router in the middle.
