Windows XP to 98 Gold Crossover

I am planning to set up a crossover network in which one computer will run
Windows XP Home Edition, and the other end will run Windows 98 Gold.
I have read several places on the internet that crossovering with 98 does
not work, including that Microsoft KB article (Q)192534 states:
If the network cabling is twisted-pair (RJ-45), you must use a hub or
concentrator. Windows 98 does not support direct connections of RJ-45 cable
between computers. This check isolates possible cabling or connector problems
that may not be clearly visible. "

The article does not mention about crossover cables. What else do I need to
get to roll in the network.
Both computers have 10/100 NICs.

Right, no-one operating system supports either "direct connections of RJ-45
cable between computers" or cross-over one. This is not OS task and physical
layer doesn't belong to it.

That is pretty confusing and, as I interpret it, half-wrong.

M$'s OSs do not support direct NIC-NIC connections via straight LAN cables.
But they do support direct NIC-NIC connections via crossover LAN cables;
a crossover cable is equivalent to a hub/switch with a pair of straight
LAN cables (think of a crossover cable as a passive hub with cables).

That said, there used to be some NICs that would not work, or would not
work well, with crossover cables; most, however, work fine with any common
flavor of XP or W9x (including mixtures) at either end of the wire.
