Dial-up in XP SP2 question

I use a modem since I'm so far in the sticks, no DSL or Cable yet, but since
installing SP2, I've noticed on the dial-up window to my ISP the following:
Checks for Port, (new action)
Opens Port, (new action)
Dialing,
Handshakes about 3 times (vs. pre SP2 of 1 time),
Verifies Username & Password
Registers your computer on the internet (new action)

I'm only user and it now takes 3 times longer to get my ISP connection.
I've called them, no help. Any suggestion out there?

Right click your connection---choose properties. Under options remove X from

Thanks, but no help. That does keep it from displaying all that status
info. It still goes through 3 hand shakes (you know the noise the modem
makes as it's connecting to other end) thus takes 3 times longer to
connect to my ISP.
