DHCP Client doesn't obtain IP address

V

Victor

I have WinXP Pro with a cable internet connection. I can
no longer connect to the internet even though everything
was fine after I upgraded to XP. On boot-up, the DHCP
client cannot obtain an IP address from the modem (or
ISP?) and I get a message that No DHCP server or proxy is
available. When I check the IP address it is the default
169.254.x.x. I have tried uninstalling Norton antivirus,
zonealarm and then re-installing xp, didn't work. I tried
ipconfig /release and /renew but the same ip address
remained. I can ping (127.x.x and the 169.254.x.x)
internally but not externally (I tried the microsoft ip).
I tried running the repair this connection protocol from
through the control panel/network connections...My cable
ISP is clueless.

I am trying to connect via dial-up to download the service
pack 1(each time I get kicked off before the download ends
I miss my cable connection so much) but I see some
postings saying that this doesn't always work.

Any other suggestions??? (please be as concrete and
detailed as possible because my windows technical
knowledge is very very basic, I don't even know how to set
a static IP address. If i need to use the command prompt,
please include tell me the syntax and the commands).

A million thanks....

Hi Victor,

You should try:

1. A new network cable, if this doesn't work try
2. a new network card, if this doesn't work,
3. have your cable company check the cable modem.

Thanks,
