Defender "Unknown Publisher"??

Prior to download it shows the WindowsInstaller Package as 4.91MB.
When I download, it says complete and varies between 350-352kb.
After clicking Run, something to the effect of "Unknown Publisher" is
displayed and asks if I'm sure I want to run it.
Well, I'm not sure.
Why the "Unknown Publisher"?
Is it safe? (Pardon the quote from Marathon Man. If you don't get it, watch
the movie.)

From your description of the size, I would suspect a corrupted download,
and would suggest downloading again, saving to the desktop, and
double-clicking the file on the desktop.

You want: windowsdefender.msi, from this link:

Windows Defender: Home Page
<www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx>

and then Download at the Desktop location.

Before that, I would suggest uninstalling Defender, deleting left over files
and folders, running CCleaner

Download the basic version via
<http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx>
The basic version does not contain the disgusted Toolbar


Uncheck:

In the INTERNET EXPLORER:
Last Download Location
Autocomplete Form History

In the WINDOWS EXPLORER:
Recent Documents

In the SYSTEM:
Clipboard
Memory Dumps
Windows Log Files
Start Menu Shortcuts
Desktop Shortcuts

In the Utilities category, uncheck WindowsDefender. Having this checked
removes the history of when the last scan was run.

DO NOT USE ANY Advanced cleaning options. DO NOT TOUCH THE REGISTRY OR
TOOLS. At least not for now (better if never TOUCH THE REGISTRY).
And remove all temporarily junk.

Reboot

And double-click to install Windows Defender

I'm hoping others will chime in. I'm unaware of the "Unknown Publisher", so
I don't really have a response that is helpful.

I hope this is enough to get you on the right road for nºw.

I agree with Engel. It is not safe. It's been a long time since I read the
book that movie is based on--not sure whether I ever saw the movie or not,
but I do remember the line...

Sorry for the late comeback.
Finally got it downloaded & installed.
The only thing I did differently was use the link you provided.
Oddly, it was almost identical to the link from MS that I originally used.
Yours ended with "/default.mspx" and mine had "/support.mspx". The pages
looked the same.
Anyhoo...it's a done deal now & I do appreciate the assist.

Can you send the link? Preferably, I think, by private mail:

I don't know whether there's a good reason that the executable at the end of
that link is still available, and I'd like to make sure Microsoft is aware
of the issue.

I'd rather not see the link posted here, because others will try it and have
a similar experience, I suspect.
