One thing that Engel may or may not have made clear (as the case may be),
is
that his award has been given in recognition of the stalwart advice and
help
he has specifically given in respect of Windows Defender (previously MS
Antispyware). Not surprising as this is, after all, a MS AS Newsgroup. If
you are using a web based browser to view these NGs and select his name
(right pane), there should appear the number of posts he has made and the
number of assists (Sounds like American football.) Impressive numbers -
4101
posts, users helped 266, questions answered 278 at the time of posting
this.
Compare this to someone like myself Who just likes to air an opinion
from
time to time but doesn`t really contribute. I`m wondering when he is going
to
be a `gold star` general MVP, now that really is something else.

i use OE to get here- does that make a difference?

That makes a difference for getting a rating on the Web site because from OE
you do not have to sign in with your Passport/Windows Live ID. However, it
does not make a difference as far as your posts being noticed by the people
who make decisions about who gets the MVP award. If you have a consistent
presence and consistently answer correctly and help people the right persons
notice. Understand that there are a relatively small number of awards given
out and not all are for work in newsgroups since there are other ways to
help people with Microsoft products. Right now I think there are a little
over 3,000 MVPs world wide and you will never see posts by most unless you
read newsgroups in their expertese and language, although some have a broad
expertese and are multilingual.
