create zipped compressed folder

W

WWW

I bought my XP computer about two years ago. To create a zip file, the Help
& Support Center says:
On the File menu, point to New,
and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder.

There are lots of options on the New menu, but "Compressed (zipped) Folder"
is not one of them.

I just bought a new computer, and the New menu on it does include this
option!

At first I thought, maybe this option was added to XP after I bought my old
computer -- but in that case -- it wouldn't be described in the Help &
Support Center in my old computer.

Why don't I have the "Compressed (zipped) Folder" option on my older XP
computer? Is there some way I can get it? (As far as I can tell, going to
a folder's Properties - Advanced and setting "Compress contents" is not the
same thing.)

Thanks,
Bill

Did you happen to install any third party Zip software, such as WinZip? This
can replace the built-in Zip support with their own Zip support, and change
the options on this menu. For me, I no longer have that, and instead have
WinZip file at the bottom of this list.

As Chris said, third party ZIP handlers cause this. To get back the Compress Folder option, type "regsvr32 zipfldr" in the RUN box. This makes XP handle the ZIP files.

Yes, I think you've got it!

I just decided to try the "Change" button for ZIP files in Folder Options -
File Types... I asked for the Web service search... it seems there is a zip
file software product called StuffIt. Apparently I downloaded their stuff
once for a trial and then de-installed it. And apparently their de-install
procedure doesn't clean up after itself.

So, how can I get Compressed (zipped) folder back on my New menu? Or is
there any other way to create such a folder, e.g., using the command line?

Thanks,
Bill

I got a message box with title "RegSvr32" and message "DllRegisterServer in
zipfldr succeeded". But the "New" menu item in Windows Explorer hasn't
changed, nor has the entry in Folder Options - File Types (the advanced
button still shows no icon and no actions).

Maybe this doesn't take effect until a reboot? I don't want to reboot now,
so I'll get back to you later if rebooting doesn't work.

Thanks,
Bill

However... then it occurred to me, I should delete that definition of "ZIP"
from file types. I ran regsvr32 again, and it all works perfectly now!!!

Thanks a bunch, Ramesh and Chris.
