Compressed files/folders

I need to be able to create some zipped files and would
prefer not to spend money on a third-party software.
Reading through XP help, it appears that I should be able
to create zip files by clickinf File|New|Compressed
folder. However, the compressed folder option isn't
there. I'm sure that I'm missing something simple. Can
anyone help? Thanks.

The 'Compressed files/folders' option isn't available via File>New. 'compressed files/folders' - using the right click method - I thought 'should' have be available when a new folder is created.

I've realised that WinZip shows up here on the File>New menu instead of 'Compressed files/folders'. Perhaps the zip program you uninstalled has something to do with this. Is the uninstalled zip program listed under File>New?
