My computers overheating when I play Rome: Total War, XIII, and the Doom 3
demo. I can play anyother 3D accelerated game I want, but "No!" my computer
says when I try to play any of those. It just has to reboots mid game. Word
cannot explain my frusteration! I see how hot my display card is and it's
just fine. Not hot at all.

Please help me before I throw my computer out a window. I've been dealing
with this for a while now.

I am using a ATI Radeon 9550, a Pentium 4 1.20 Ghz Processer, an ECS mobo,
and "Patriot" 512MB RAM.

Hi Matt,

If overheating is the problem then the pc automatically shuts down to
prevent damage to the CPU.

Try hovering your ventilation and fans and dusting them with a soft brush.
Remember to unplug your pc and take care when cleaning them.

If you have recently changed or removed your fan, did you remember to
replace the thermal interface material? If you havent' replaced the fan or
heatsink, the hoovering and cleaning of your vents should make a difference.
If not, you may have to replace the thermal interface material.

Remember to thoroughly clean off the old TIM and be liberal when applying
the new. Pads of TIM are ok too.

Would try the cleaning first and making sure that the fan is ok.

Hope this helps.

Hi Matt13333,

Hardware issues can cause freezing, black screens and other
errors. Also, your drivers should always be kept up to date.

Try the following steps one at a time to try and resolve the issue.
I hope this helps. Please post back if you have any questions! :)

1. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

2. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to expose an over-
heating issue.. If it works add more fans or replace defective ones.
Use this Motherboard Monitor Utility: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

3. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to check the
wattage sticker on your power supply and then calculate your need
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ (Min. 350 for gaming)

4. Test your RAM using: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Beside T9552 and Jimmy S. advises,

If your computer resets without any warning or freeze then you have an
overheating issue with your cpu. Make your cpu cool and if possible upgrade
your cooling system.
