Start computer in safe mode
Start> Run> type "msconfig" command w/o quotes
Select "Diagnostic Startup", this un-selects all entries shown under
"Startup" tab.
This is more than likely where the problem is.
Reboot computer and see if it will start "Normally"
Restart Msconfig. One by one enable entries under "Startup" tab until system
again fails to start "Normally".
If this approach fails, perform "Clean Boot" as described in various MS KB
articles
such as See atteched links

You might also edit your Boot.ini file while you're in msconfig. Here's an
example of mine, but remember that you have to adapt it to your configuration.
[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="SAFE MODE with Network"
/safeboot:network/sos/bootlog
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="SAFE MODE" /safeboot/sos/bootlog

Well, I don't want to step on Dixonian69's toes but, when you locate the
problem item you have two choices.
1. As Dix said, it's most likely being loaded in a "startup" somewhere,
possibly in the Registry. You can edit the location in the registry, "Export"
the location to a specific folder and delete the offending item.
or, if you don't want to edit the registry,
2. Disable the item in MSConfig and run the system that way.
Your object is to get the system running and that would be one of the
fastest ways to do so.
