Can bot only in safe mode

I have a systemax 2002 laptop with windows xp os. It will only boot in the
safe mode. I can't run system restore or any kind of scan. I can't get on the
internet in the safe mode. Can anyone tell me how to get it to start in the
last good configuration or normal mode? I can't find the xp cd that came with
the computer.

Pressing F8 before the system boots brings up the menu with System
Restore and Safe Mode. If you can find a different XP cd that is the
same version of yours (home/pro), then boot into Safe Mode and open a
command prompt. Insert the cd into the laptop. Type SFC /scannow and
press enter. If it tells you that it can't repair while windows is
running, type SFC /scanonce && shutdown /r

This should repair your operating system.

Why, what happens when you try, are there error notices? Please provide
specific information.
I can't get on the
internet in the safe mode.

Why--did you not choose safe mode with networking?

What happens when you try?

Since it could be a driver issue, take a look here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283657

Did you regularly scan your laptop with up to date antivirus and malware
programs?

well, you might try booting in the
safemode you have and then taking
a look to see if the safemode switch
is enabled.

click on start>run>msconfig

then under the boot tab there is a
check box for safemode.

also, it is interesting that you state
system restore doesn't work in
safemode,

because it should.

so what you might also want to do
while is safemode is to set up your
system for a clean boot.

so under that start tab of the msconfig
window, disable all your startups by
unchecking all the line items.

then go to services tab and "hide"
all microsoft services.

then what remains you can uncheck
to disable those non microsoft services.

then reboot and see if you can now
access normal mode.
