Complete registry restore?

How would I go about doing a complete manual registry restore? I loaded an
old registry from a previous install of Windows onto a fresh install and
messed things up. I did create a registry backup, however. I can partially
import the old registry, but it won't complete due to the processes running
in the background. How can I completely import my previous registry and
replace the messy one?

At this point I would suggest performing a System Restore from Safe Mode.
System Restore is the built-in tool for restoring the registry, and more.

Here is a description of System Restore:

If you want to just backup and restore the registry, I would suggest using
Erunt.
