it's a more complex
issue that simple
file copying and
pasting.
the registry hive is a
complex and highly
critical system.
therefore, what you would
have to do is to utilize the
repair console via the cd
and access the disk directly
so that you can perform the
file management outside of
the windows environment.
another suggestion is to first
copy the current registry into
a safe place before you
replace it with the one you
want.
that way you can undue
the process, if necessary
and copy back what you
had.
the basic methodology and
the location of the registry
hive can be found in
part 1, sec 5 of the kb
below.

own copy of the registry
skip the instructions pertaining
to the one in the repair folder:

as a final step of assurance,
make a restore point at
this time as well.
in the event that nothing
goes as planned, you can
utilize the kb, the emergency
registry in the repair folder
and then your restore point.
