Suppose I could go to a third party one, but OE is soooo convenient (for
BOTH Mail and News), as it seemlessly integrates with IE.

And it's free.

Agent does mail too.

OK, and I don't know what Robin found out either, at this point, and maybe
she'll test it out a bit further.

I'd bet "Robin" is a he. Women don't generally use their middle
initial in email addresses ("Robin Clay" <Robin_B DOT Clay AT virgin

Me, too.

Does it make a difference to you ?

(I know it does to me, but there y'go...)

Google gives me two pages of hits with that - perhaps I should change it.

Erm - No !

That IS the issue !

See my very first post in this thread !

:

If you haven't already, see the last reply I made to Robin. It is a known
issue, but up till then, reoccurring prompts were never mentioned by Robin.

May I refer you to my very first post that started this entire thread ?

May I ask how often you open and close OE? As I previously stated, the
compact prompt only pops up after 100 closings of OE.

Usually only once a day when I switch off.
Now if you see the prompt more often that 100 closings, then there is
another issue we need to discuss.

That's actually where it all started !

See first message in the thread.

it persistently askes to compact - even just a few minutes after it HAS
compacted !
</QP>

Then you /do/ have another problem.

No ! THAT is the problem wot prompted me to start this thread !
The problem is with the registry counter that gives you the prompt after 100
closings of OE. It is being increased quicker than it should be

Ah ! Maybe....
There is a growing number of programs and actions that may be causing this
after installing SP3.

I didn't know that.
Do you have any of the following?
IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLL
Windows {Desktop} Search
Mailwasher
Nero plug-in(s)

I don't know...
What exactly is "Windows {Desktop} Search", and how can I tell if I've got
it ?

Sounds worse than swine flu....
Opening EML files while OE is closed will also contribute to the registry
count.

That I have done, very occasionally.
Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls, especially if
they were running when you installed SP3.
Maybe...

In the case of Windows Desktop Search, (the #1 offender), you have to tell
it to stop indexing OE.

Windows {Desktop} Search. Set Desktop Search Options:
http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/desktopsearch/search/options.mspx
~~~~~~
Is that upside down ?
Control Panel | Indexing Options. Click: Modify
.... and NOTHING happens....
In the option to exclude selected file types from indexing, be sure to add
these file types:
..eml, .dbx & .nws
No entry for .dbx, but the other two are unchecked.
Thank you for your suggestions.
Part of the challenge is that it's intermittent - it can go for WEEKS
without appearing - and then it will appear every ten minutes or so - EVEN if
I have accepted the first time.
As it effectively locks up the computer, I'd be quite happy to leave it
running overnight, or when I stop for lunch - but when *I* want to, not when
*IT* decides !
Bastard.
In your first message in the thread, (that you started new), you mentioned
compacting a few folders manually. The registry counter does not reset to
zero unless you compact Folder.dbx which requires a Compact All Folders.
I guess you found Windows Search? Do you ever use it? If not, remove it.
ProcMon can tell you what program is indexing OE although I have never used
it so you're on your own there.
I did indeed, for at that stage in my naivite I thought that OE was
monitoring the state of compaction.
However, I then went on to write, in that same first message:-
"the program sometimes keeps popping up a window offering to
compact my folders - every few minutes ! When I accept, it locks up the
computer for about ten mionutes while it does it - even if I accepted the
previous time a few minutes before !"
The registry counter does not reset to zero unless
you compact Folder.dbx which requires a Compact All Folders.
Uh-huh - BUT - WHY does it pop up AGAIN just a few minutes AFTER having
compacted ? See excerpt above from first message.
THAT is why I originally asked how to turn it off.
Is that different from the "Windows {Desktop} Search" of which you wrote
earlier ?
What I sometimes use is the "Search" button in Windows Explorer, and the
"Find" button in Outlook Express.
Is either of these what you are referring to ?
Whatever - when I followed your suggestion (above):-
NOTHING happens....
Or perhaps I mean, Nothing SEEMS to happen ;-)
Thank you again for writing.
Windows Search, (originally Windows Desktop Search). is an add-on program.
If you don't see it in Start | All Programs, or the Control Panel |
Add/Remove, then you don't have it and something else is to blame.
My apologies. I honestly didn't know that Robin was, or could be, a guy's
name. Well, ok, maybe there is Robin Williams, come to think of it (if I
remember that right). So I guess it could be either a man's or a woman's
name then.
Robin Hood?
K
Ken Blake, MVP
LOL. Thanks, that makes another one!
Then there's the Robin of "Batman and Robin."
More important, *any* name can be given to anyone, regardless of that
person's sex. It's probably very unusual for there to be women named
Bill, but it's highly likely that there are at least a few. And
speaking about my own name, I've never met a woman named Kenneth, but
I once met one named Kennetha.
Or a man named Sue? YEAH, I'd say *highly* unlikely.
but it's highly likely that there are at least a few.
I seriously doubt it - and even moreso for the latter (Sue) - like zero
instances, I bet (except in the Johnny Cash song).
Well, here in GREAT Britain, where everything starts, it's almost always a
"male" name - the female of the species (not that there are many) is more
usually called Robyn.
I was named for the pet name that my grandmother used for her husband Robert.
Five letters, not six. Compacted, you see. Back on thread....
