Choosing whether to stay connected after Send/Receive

J

Jeff

My previous version of Outlook (2k) used to have a checkbox in the
Send/Receive details window, (the box which is visible during Send/Receive).
It said something like 'Disconnect after sending and receiving' and if it
was checked it did just that.

I'm now running Outlook XP, and somehow it's set up so that after a
Send/Receive, the connection is not severed. Sometimes this is useful,
(depending on what else I'm doing online), but most of the time it means I
have to manually disconnect using the icon in the System Tray.

There is a box in the same position, but now the option is to 'Don't show
this dialogue box during send/receive'.

I have scoured everywhere, but can't find a way to choose whether Outlook
will disconnect my internet connection, or stay connected. It MUST be here
somewhere, can anyone point me to it PLEASE?!
Thanks

An answer to your question would require you to provide your mail account
type, connection type, and automatic polling settings. Provide a more
explicit description of the behavior you want to see for each mail poll and
whether that poll is automatic or manual.

Ok Russ, here goes. I'm accessing a pop3 mailbox via a dialup connection
using usb software modem on an isdn line (we don't have broadband here...)

Usually I simply use the Send/Receive button on the standard toolbar to
check for mail. If I'm not online, the Connect To box appears and I go
online. But then, if I want to disconnect immediately after checking email,
I need to use the systray icon. I don't use any automatic retrieval
schedule.

Now that I have an unlimited use isdn package, I tend to stay online all
evening, so its often no problem that Outlook does not close the interenet
connection when its checked for mail. But sometimes I just want to do a
very quick check for email - and in 2k (using the same mail settings and the
same connection)I could check that box to tell it 'Disconnect after
send/receive' or words to that effect. And on my neighbour's machine,
(using Office 2003, with exactly the same mail arrangements as me), his
Outlook prompts him to connect, sends and receives mail, then automatically
disconnects. How do you do that!?

Thanks.

If you want Outlook to manage the connection, set the connection type to
Phone Line. If not, set it to LAN.

The connection type is set to phone line. I have one connection. I don't
have a lan. Any other suggestions please?

It does not matter whether you have a LAN or not. That setting only
determines how Outlook manages a connection.
If you set the connection type to Phone Line and set an automatic polling
interval, Outlook will disconnect after the first poll. If you set it to
LAN, it will connect and stay connected.
