can't send email - Error #0x800CCC0F

Kiwi John - I have looked at all the postings for Nov. 1 but cannot find one
with your name on it. Could you please be more specific with your
instructions as to how I might locate your posting (which I am hoping will
help me with my email issues)? Unfortunately, I am not very
computer-literate, and I am obviously doing something wrong. My tech person
never came back as he had promised, so I am still trying to use Earthlink
Webmail to send emails without having an Address list, and I am still unable
to send emails via my once-upon-a-time-reliable Windows Mail. Thanks for
offering to help. It is said that everyone needs a humbling experience now
and then; I guess this is mine at present.

I have been presented with, but to no avail. I feel like going back to pen
and paper and telephone - they are slow, but at least they are reliable,
which is more than I can say for Microsoft, Vista, Norton, and Earthlink.
But thank you for trying to help me; I really do appreciate it.

Did you install the update I mentioned?

Thanks for trying, Mr. Saunders. I finally hired a tech person; he came
to
my house today, did everything you said to do, but I still can't send
email.
He researched the error message; he thinks the issue is with a recent
update
to Windows Vista and its resultant interface with Earthlink's outgoing
server. It is unfixable at present. So I am $105 poorer and haven't got
a
darned thing to show for it. Bah. But thank you for trying to help - I
do
appreciate it.

:

New computer Feb.07. Norton 360 installed Apr.07. All worked just
fine
with
Windows Mail until a few days ago, then suddenly I could not send
email,
but
could still receive it. I learned that Earthlink had made changes in
their
outgoing mail server to help fight spam. I made the required changes
(smtp
to smtpauth, and Port 25 to 587) in my email settings, but still could
not
send emails. "Server requires Authentication" is checked. I disabled
Norton's email scanning. I deleted the emails in my Outbox and created
a
new
test message to myself, but it still would not send. I turned the
computer
off and let it rest. Nothing has helped. The error message reads:
Your
server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this
include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity.
Subject 'test message', Account: [my correct email address] Mail
Account',
Server: 'smtpauth.earthlink.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port 587,
Secure(SSL):
Yes, Error Number 0x800CCC0F. Can anyone help? I am not very
computer
literate.

First, install this update and empty the Outbox.
Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a
computer
that is running Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090
It also works on other folders.

Then uninstall Norton.
Then run this program to finish uninstalling Norton:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Then delete the account in WinMail and close WinMail.
Reopen WinMail and re-enter the account.
Now try to send.

Ella,
I have had my new computer (vista 32bit) and set up e-mail with
McAffee(Trial) running, which all worked fine until I installed the free AVG
anti-virus. I then got the same error message as you. After reading other
forum advice I UNINSTALLED rather than Disabled the McAffee and now Hooray my
Windows mail is sending and recieving once more. There do seem to be
incompatibilities with some security software and Vista. I was recommended by
'Computing which?' to use the AVG anti-virus with vista and not a complete
Internet security as it is not needed with Vista. Vista has a powerful
Firewall and good anti spyware (defender) AVG is also Free!
I hope this is helpful

Thanks for your input, Z. Freebie. My new computer came with Norton (trial).
I bought Norton 360 back in April when the trial period expired. Everything
worked just fine until October; all of a sudden I couldn't send emails, but

360, and he installed the free AVG antivirus. But I still cannot send

set up a new email account, but nothing has worked. I don't know what else
to do. I'm glad you finally got yours to work - I wish I could do the same

Thanks, Robert, I will try to turn off the email scanning feature of my free
AVG antivirus. I am not very computer literate, so this may take me awhile.
(I am a retired nurse whose very first computer was created with spare parts

ago.) I have learned on my own, by trial and error, since then. It has been

In order for AVG to be compatible with Windows Mail,
one must choose the 'custom' option during installation,
which then gives you the option to forego installation of the
mail scanning module. Because of this complication, I
recommend Avast for those who want a free antivirus.

Then run this program to finish uninstalling Norton:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Then delete the account in WinMail and close WinMail.
Reopen WinMail and re-enter the account.
Now try to send.

New computer Feb.07. Norton 360 installed Apr.07. All worked just fine with
Windows Mail until a few days ago, then suddenly I could not send email, but
could still receive it. I learned that Earthlink had made changes in their
outgoing mail server to help fight spam. I made the required changes (smtp
to smtpauth, and Port 25 to 587) in my email settings, but still could not
send emails. "Server requires Authentication" is checked. I disabled
Norton's email scanning. I deleted the emails in my Outbox and created a new
test message to myself, but it still would not send. I turned the computer
off and let it rest. Nothing has helped. The error message reads: Your
server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this
include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity.
Subject 'test message', Account: [my correct email address] Mail Account',
Server: 'smtpauth.earthlink.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port 587, Secure(SSL):
Yes, Error Number 0x800CCC0F. Can anyone help? I am not very computer
literate.

Hi Ella,

You may have long solved this issue, however I'd been searching for a
solution and finally figured it out, so this could help others :)

When configuring the email account under Tools -> Accounts -> (select
email account) Properties -> Servers.

In the box that says "Email username", you must enter the entire email
address, not just the user name.

You still want to use the SMTP server: smtpauth.earthlink.net, port
587

Hope this helps! This also applied to Mozilla Thunderbird.

Dear Krista - Thank you SO MUCH for your help with my email-sending issue.
Your fix was absurdly simple and was also INSTANTLY EFFECTIVE. I can't
believe that I can actually send emails once again! Verified it with a
friend/neighbor this evening - it works!!! This is such a blessing to me .
Do you have a favorite charity? I would love to send a donation in your
honor. Please let me know.

Gary:
I have seen many posts on sending attachments in Windows Mail.
I recently discovered Windows Mail updated and turned on the "Break apart
messages larger than..." and a message size.
So, if a message and attachment is larger than say 256, it will break the
message into many messages. Doing this splits the attachment(s) and renders
them useless.
Email programs try to open the attachment, but can only find part of it and
show the attachment as ASCII machine language.

The fix is:
Open Windows Mail
Click Tools
Click Accounts
Select your default email account and click Properties
Click the Advanced Tab
In the Sending section, uncheck the "Break apart messages larger than..." box
Click Apply
Click OK
The problem should be fixed.

Windows Mail will show an envelope alternating with a red cross (bullseye)
icon in the active programs tray at the bottom right of the screen, when it
is trying to break apart email messages.

Your internet provider often has a maximum size for outgoing email
messages. If you exceed this size, you'll have problems sending the
message.

Splitting attachments only helps if it keeps the message sizes below
this maximum.

The OP ("Barbara Martz") had a problem with her connection hanging up
when she tried to send a large attachment. Even if Windows Mail were
configured to break large attachments into smaller chunks, that should not
cause WM to hang up before finishing the chore.

I agree that there is no need to break up large attachments as long as
the size is under the ISP's limit.

To stop a Norton antivirus program from causing problems in Windows Mail,
you need to uninstall it, not just disable it.

Instructions from Earthlink:

http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=192059

If you want a replacement antivirus program, I recommend either avast or
AVG, with a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans
email:

I just had the same problem and finally got it to work!

I ended up using the SMTP settings from my ISP rather than from my website.
Then for the password I had to use my default email address and password,
rather than my second email address (the one that was getting the error
message).

Good luck

Thank you for trying to help me, Mr. VanderMolen. The tech person who came
to my home today did uninstall my Norton 360. He installed something called
AVG. He did lots of other things, but I still can't send email. He thinks
the issue is a recent Microsoft update for Vista, along with its interface
with Earthlink's outgoing mail server. Supposedly a big fix for a multitude
of Vista problems will be coming out early next year. Thanks again for
trying to help a little ol' lady who is not very computer-savvy.

Make sure you are not using incompatible third party security
software. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee

uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their

I was and still am also having issues/error message with my windows not be

Yes, that is known as a hybrid account (non-matched POP and SMTP
servers). I've helped a lot of people with that setup. Glad to see you
got it working.
