Can't play DVDs after SP3 update

P

My Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, which uses Windows Media Player
V10.00.00.4058, quit playing DVDs after I upgraded WinXP Home Edition from
Service Pack 2 to Service Pack 3. Media player produces the error message
that it has experienced a problem and needs to shut down when it detects a
DVD in the CD/DVD player. Audio CDs and program disk CDs work OK and WMP
reads the titles and chapter titles on DVDs. Windows error reporting shows
the following:

1/13/2009 7:45 PM Application Error Faulting application wmplayer.exe,
version 10.0.0.3646, faulting module nevideo.ax, version 2.0.2.23, fault
address 0x00002eb7.

The program nevideo.ax (11-24-2004) appears to be a MPEG-1/2/4 & AVC video
decoder.

Note: I could not find WMPlayer.exe Version 10.00.00.4058 on my hard drive
which is the version listed under “about media player†when the player is
open (on audio CDs). The error report refers to version 10.0.0.3646, which I
did find in 3 places on my hard drive along with one instance of version
9.0.0.3250.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, that looks like it might just be a codec thing. Give K-Lite Mega
Codec Pack 4.4.5 a shot. It's free:

How do I find out what audio and video codecs Windows Media Player is using?
How / can I change them? How do I find what codecs are on my hard drive,
i.e. do they have specific file extensions?

Any codec packs on your computer will show up in the Add/Remove Programs.
Uninstall any other codec packs before installing K-Lite.
Get K-Lite Codec Pack from
http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm
Be sure to get the FULL pack.
K-Lite is free and works great.

I tried an idea in a Wikipedia article on .vob files. I changed the
extension of a .vob file to .mpg and it played. Maybe the nevideo.ax codec
doesn't know what a .vob file is.

That's easy, actually: you have a terribly old version of Nero. Why or how?
That's horrifically old. Either update it to a more recent version or
uninstall it.

The K-Lite codec pack contains many codecs. Which one should I use to
replace Nero's ancient NEVIDEO.AX. Do I just delete the file NEVIDEO.AX, I
don't see an uninstall program for it. Will Windows Media Player V10
automatically select the new, better video codec?

The NEVIDEO.AX came in the software bundle that came with the ADS Instant
Music Stereo USB ADC.

Only Nero would replace it's own codec. WMP10 should use the new codec
over anything else. If you have errors due to nevideo.ax, you can
always try and rename it to something like NEVIDEO.AX.BLAH or whatever
you want.

I renamed NEVIDEO.AX to NE~VIDEO.AX. Now WMP10 plays DVDs OK. Nice, simple
solution. Thanks.

And there was much rejoicing. Glad it worked out.
