Can no longer play DVDs in WMP10 (C00D1163)

Why can't I play DVDs in WMP? I used to be able to. Here is the error
message received no matter which DVD is put in there.

"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a problem occurred
with digital copy protection.
C00D1163: A problem occurred with digital copyright protection
To play DVDs, you must have a DVD-ROM drive and a software or hardware
DVD decoder installed on your computer.
Error ID = 0xC00D1163, Condition ID = 0x00000000"

According to the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility, the CyberLink
Video/SP Decoder (CLVsd.ax) has 3 green check marks, so it is installed
properly and is compatible with WMP 10 and MCE. It is the preferred
decoder. There are three other decoders in the list and two of them have
red X's.

To view this chart properly, read it with a monospace (fixed width) font.

Installed MPEG-2 decoders:

MP10 Decoder Decoder Decoder MCE Preferred
Compat. Vendor File Name Version Compat. Decoder
------- -------- --------- ------- ------- ---------
Yes CyberLink Video/SP Decoder CLVsd.ax 6.0.1.1921 Yes Yes
No Nero Video Decoder NeVideo.ax 2.0.2.54 Yes
No Nero DVD Decoder NeVideo.ax 2.0.2.54 No
No Nero Video Decoder HD NeVideoHD.ax 1.0.0.6 No

For the ones that have No in the first column, "This decoder is not
compatible with the synchronization feature of Windows Media Player 10.
We recommend against setting this decoder as the preferred decoder.

1. The following Windows Updates were installed recently. Could it be
one of them? I really cannot tell you whether or not my DVD-playing
problem in WMP was present before installing these updates. Maybe, maybe
not. Windows Defender was also installed recently (Microsoft Antispyware
was uninstalled first.)

-- a. Definition Update 1.14.1288.5 for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597)
-- b. Definition Update 1.14.1314.1 for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597)
-- c. Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
-- d. Update for WMDRM-enabled Media Players (KB891122)
-- e. MS Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider: x86 (KB909520)
-- f. Windows Media Connect 2.0 (KB909993)
-- g. Update for Windows XP (KB912945)
-- h. Update for Windows XP (KB904942)
-- i. Update for Windows XP (KB912475)
-- j. Update for WMDRM-enabled Media Players (KB902344)
-- k. Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0: x86 (KB829019)
-- l. Definition Update1.14.1315.1 for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597)

(I could go back further to February, but let's start with these first.)
Everything installed correctly the first time except for Net Framework
2.0. There were two instances of Net Framework 2.0 beta in Add-Remove
Programs, so I removed them both. After rebooting, the new 2.0 (non
beta) version downloaded and installed correctly from Microsoft Update.

2. Could there be a problem with PowerDVD 6 Deluxe? Should I try
uninstalling and reinstalling it?

3. Could there be a problem with Nero 7 Ultra? Uninstalling and
reinstalling Nero 7 would be a lot more work than uninstalling and
reinstalling PowerDVD, but I could do it.

4. What else should I check or try?

System Restore is disabled, so that's not an option.
My operating system base is XP Pro SP1. It has been upgraded to SP2.

It would probably be best to post this to the windows media player
newsgroup.
