Can't 'play all' or 'play selection'

After reinstalling Windows XP I can't get it to 'play all' or 'play
selection' in my music folder. There's no error message, Windows Media
Player does not pop up, it just sits there and does nothing. As if the links
are dead.

It will play an entire CD no problem.
Just not any size of selection on my hard drive.

Any idea what's up with it?
clicking on songs indivually drives me insane!

It worked fine originally, it's been cleanly reinstalled twice now, both
times it's had this problem.

Cheers for any help anyone can give me.

Ok, so after going back almost the full 40 pages I discovered the problem may
be AVG Virus Scanner. It makes sense as the first time I reinstalled Windows
was after a virus and I needed a free scanner. However, my mum has XP and
AVG and her 'play all' is fine.

Any ideas if it's related to another problem? And if AVG IS the problem,
are there any other good free virus scanners about?
