"play selection" and "play all" options

hey.. i give up.. when i open my folder that has all of my
music files, there's a button on the left that says "play
all" or "play selection". this seems like an easy way to
hear specific songs without having to make a playlist every
time. but when i click on 'play all' nothing happens!!!
why!?!!?!? it's aggravating.. anyone know about this?

It would help the readers of this post if you could tell them what media player
you are using, such as WMP, Jukebox, RealPlayer, etc.
