media player cannot play the file

i somehow "lost" 4,000 music files. i used a recovery program (recuva.com) to
recover them but they will not play on media player(which they did
previously).
when i double click on a song i get the following message "the file you are
attempting to play has an extension (.wma or .mp3) that does not match the
file format. playing the file may result in unexpected behavior. do you want
the player to try to play this content?" if i click yes i get the message
"windows media player cannot play the file. the player might not support the
file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress this
file." i am using windows xp. any ideas?

Try Googling: "wma or mp3 codec compression" and read some of the top
links.....You may need to update your software.....Try the freeware
first......
