Cant open MSCONFIG, Task Manager or Regedit

S

Scott

I cannot open Task Manager, Regedit or MSCONFIG. When I
do, it will open it then close it before I can do
anything. Sometimes this is split second, sometimes 1 to 2
seconds. I am logged in on the only user setup on XP,
which is my primary login with full administrative
permissions. Can someone help me please, this is beginning
to be very troublesome. Does anyone know a solution to
this?

Hi Scott,

Run the script here on line 261 (right hand side)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

From there clean your system of the worm(s) you are infected with.

You have all the symptoms of rogue software running on your system. It's
keeping you from stopping it by shutting down the tools you could use to
kill it.

First you need to shut down the rogue program. Two approaches are possible,
opening a console window and using a few command line tools, or renaming the
Task Manager executable. Try the second option. Find taskmgr.exe, I think
it's in the windows\system32 folder. Rename it to perdita.exe or some other
execrable name. When you double-click the renamed file, Task Manager should
run. So far the bug only knows the standard name for Task Manager.

The next job is to identify the rogue software. It has used the name
wincfg.scr, but this can change. Anyway, the rogue software will try to pass
itself of as legitimate Windows software by the name it uses. If you can
identify a suspicious item, use Task Manager to shut it down. If you are
successful, use msconfig to keep it from running as a startup program. And,
last of all, if you are sure you have the bad software nailed down, find the
executable and delete it!
