Can't Login to Windows Mail

I'm trying to setup my yahoo.com.au account in windows mail and can't even
login.
Here is the error message...
Account: 'Craig Yahoo', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com.au', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR popgate unknown command', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

I've used the settings that appear on my servers page, but I continually get
a "windows security" window titled "Logon to ..." that asks me to verify
username and password for my email server. I type in my email account
username and pass, and the window just keeps reappearing. If I press cancel,
the error message appears...
Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com.au', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com.au',
Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] invalid user/password', Port:
995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers.
Uncheck the box for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."

If you are sure you are you are entering the correct username and
password, one possible cause for that error is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Thanks for your reply.

I've tried deleting and reestablishing my account; turning email scanning
off with anti virus software; and trying windows live, and had exactly the
same problem in windows live.
The anti virus program I have is AVG 7.5 (free edition). Somehow the
problem seems more basic (but I've looked at all the details pretty closely)
have I missed something really obvious - I know my username and password are
the same.

Error message -
Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com.au', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com.au',
Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] invalid user/password', Port:
110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Go into your online webmail settings for that account, and make sure the
POP option is enabled.
