Cannot sort by "dimensions" sometimes in a specific folder

This is on an XP Media Center Edition machine. There's a folder in
which I sometimes place new photographs, to examine and categorize
before moving them elsewhere. Sometimes I place a new batch in there
and find that only sort by name, modified, size, and type are available
-- "dimensions" (and "date picture taken") have disappeared from the
list! I can put it back via view menu, choose details, but it lasts
only a few hours, and then it disappears again! Why is the setting not
persistent? If I choose different details (or other characteristics)
for that or another folder, I want them to stay unchanged until I
choose to change them again -- preferably even through a reboot and
certainly during a single session during which time the folder window
is continuously open! How do I accomplish this -- and why isn't it
remembering these settings persistently automatically?

Go to this site and download TweakUI.exe in one of your folder.
Double click on the file to install it.
Click on Start and All Programs.
Power Toy for windows will be listed there. Click on it to open a list.
Click on TweakUI for Windows XP.
A window will open.
Click on the + sign next to Explorer to open a list.
Click on Customizations and change the number to 5000. Click OK.

Click on the folder you want to highlight it in blue.
Click on Tools on the top bar.
Click on Folder options
Click on the view tab
Scroll down and check the box "Remember each folder view settings". If this
box already had a check, increasing the number to 5000 should take care of
the problem.

It still sometimes forgets, even with that thing set to 5000.

It seems related to the directory sometimes being empty, and to the
occasions when Explorer suddenly acts as if you went to every open
window in turn, right clicked, and hit "Refresh" without you having
done anything of the sort.
