Cannot Open Attachments

And how do you turn off email scanning when I've Microsoft's Windows Live?
Does this mean I'm forever stuck with either not seeing ANY attachments that
are sent to me or throwing my Vista in the trash and going back to XP?

Do you mean Windows Live OneCare?

I have Windows Live OneCare on my system and have no problems viewing, opening
or saving attachments in Windows Mail.

Yes, but there's no provision in WLOC to turn off email scanning.
For that matter, I don't know if it *does* email scanning. I do know
that my only instance of getting a message stuck in the Outbox
happened when WLOC was my antivirus program, so I got rid
of WLOC.

I got WLOC free with my purchase of Vista Ultimate on release date, and so far
(knock wood, cross fingers), I have had no problems at all with it interfering
with Windows Mail or with anything else in Vista.

I installed Norton AntiVirus and now I can open Attachments in Windows Vista
Mail. Previously, I had to email messages to Yahoo and open attachments that
way as a work around. When I bought Vista Upgrade it came with Norton
AntiVirus but I did not install it because I was trying to solve the Windows
Mail problem first before adding another software. Then I installed it
recently. Why doesn't Microfat come out and inform everyone that this
co-partnership with Norton AntiVirus provides the best solution. They
advertised that Vista was like a replacement to other Virus software and we
might save money not having to buy additional virus protection software. This
is all a scam to sell a new box of software called Vista. They should be
charged for this crime of wasting our time trying to correct their defective
software. Why did they create this new message board to hear about our
problems with their software. It is admission of guilt. We are their slaves
and guinea pigs with their new software and somebody should be fired. They
are getting free feedback from us. Actually, Windows XP with Outlook Express
is sufficient and I would recommend anyone to stay with that system and use
Norton System Works virus software. I should have read CNET's review of
Windows Vista before buying into this software scam. It is working now after
40 hours of wasted time.

I uninstalled Norton Antivirus and then reinstalled it as I already had it
installed. I still cannot open or save attachments. I have no idea what to
try next - I have tried everything posted about this problem.

Did you enable attachments?
Tools, Options, Security, uncheck "Do not allow attachments..."

Thanks Gary but I did everything that has been listed on this subject for the
past few months. However, yesterday I downloaded Thunderbird and I am back
in business. I am using Thunderbird as my main mail program now. I did
enable attachments, etc. When I first started using Outlook Express with
Vista, I had no trouble at all and I have no idea what I did but all of a
sudden it would not work.

Good to hear that Thunderbird is working out for you.
Not sure what all you tried, but if you ever ran Norton or McAfee antivirus
on that machine, sometimes you have to use a special removal utility to
get rid of all the remnants, else you may continue to suffer bad effects.

I am no expert, just a beginner. Norton has an update on their website that
fixed my can't open attachment problems. My vista system came with Norton and
worked fine for a while then went away. I hope this helps some one.

I to have had this problem with attachments.... am new to vista and Win Mail
with a brand new comp. Have tried all things mentioned in this discussion but
to no avail. Today I decided to download, install and run Spybot Search and
Destroy..... amazingly it found a whole heap of rubbish in the registry that
was not picked up with any of my previous scans with Norton, windows etc.
...... To cut a long and frustrating story short, Spybot fixed all the
problems found and I can now open and save all attachments in Win Mail.....
Give it a go, you might get lucky as did I. Hope this helps guys.....

I had the same problem. As one person wrote, you do have to download
anti-virus software. There is a free one on www.mozilla.com for email called
Thunderbird. My problem was solved instantly. Good luck.
