Cannot find server, Page cannot be displayed

Greg

Having problems with computer on home network. Two
computers networked, with broadband Internet. One
computer works great. But when I open Internet Explorer
on the other PC, I get the famous "cannot find server,
page cannot be displayed". This computer is running
Windows 98 SE. I have uninstalled and reinstalled TCP/IP
and Dialup Networking. I have quadruple checked the
TCP/IP settings and gateway and DNS addresses are
correct. I ran spybot and cleaned all spyware. I can
successfully ping the gateway and dns IP's, so I know the
network card and cable are good. I even hooked up the
other computer to that cable just to make sure, and it
works fine. I updated IE5 to IE6. But I still cannot get
on the Internet. Does anyone have any ideas???? Why can I
ping the DNS, but IE cannot find it? Plese Help!

Thanks for the response. Followed the directions on this
page, but still no success. Any other ideas???

Greg,
Repairing your Winsock Connection

If you have suddenly lost your Internet connection after removing spy-ware
(such as NewDotNet, and Commonname) the following steps will help restore
your connection.

Repairs Winsock 2 settings: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
[or]
WinsockFix.exe (by: Option^Explicit)

Hi Greg.By any chance are you using a net booster that
caches your visited websites? If so you'll need to clear
those out. Also delete everything within your hosts
file. After about a week of the same problem I was looking
thru some stuff in my net booster and found the saved
sites by accident.Erased them and cleared the hosts file
and now all is back to normal. My wild guess is one or
more of the sites changed IP addresses and that screwed
up the whole works!!Good luck!!!!

I still dont understand why I can successfully ping the IP's
of the gateway and DNS but IE is refusing to work??

ping without options uses a minimally sized ICMP packet.
See what happens if you change the size of the test packet.
Use the procedure in the following article for guidance
(perhaps first without using the -f switch).

<title>314825 - How to Troubleshoot Black Hole Router Issues</title>

(I have suggested people use that article only to prove if they need
to change their MTU size for a particular destination.
Then go to a networking newsgroup which specializes in this stuff.)

Another thing wrong with ping is that many sites are blocking
ICMP packets far away from the target server because of the
morons who do those "Denial of Service" exploits.

So you might be better off using telnet to the site's port 80
as a test. Even there some sites are getting more particular
about how they will let you simulate a browser. It used to be
sufficient just to simulate the HTTP request by entering GET /
but increasingly I am finding it necessary to be more specific
than that.

Do you have any specific examples of sites you are having
problems with?

Greg,
Cannot Open a Web Page in Internet Explorer and "Page Cannot Be Displayed"
Error Is Displayed
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293402
Article references that you can ping but not connect via IE-
Solution: delete the TIF (see below)
-
You may need to clear your TIF as you may have a corrupt file there.

Close all instances of OE and IE
Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab
Click the "Delete Files" button, when prompted place a check in:
"Delete all offline content", click OK
Click the "Clear History" button, click OK.
Click the Settings button, adjust the TIF size to 50 mb, click OK
