Cannot access mcafee.com or symantec. com

I had a problem with spyware that I took care of. But now I cannot access
certain websites and some websites take a really long time to come up. I
have IE7. I upgraded from IE6 thinking that might solve my problem but it
didnt. Is there anything else that I can check to be able to access these
websites again. I am stumped. I am thinking of just doing a fresh install.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

Usually caused by virus detect programs. Try using Microsoft firewall
instead of any other.

Look at your "hosts" file, there is some malware that blocks the
access to *any* antivirus manufacturer assigning their URL to
localhost, so the installed antivirus program cannot find the server
for the auto update process.

If you find this issue, replace your "host" file with one from a clean
machine, and do a good check from a good and *updated*
antivirus-antispyware.

The "host" file is located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
folder.

Could be the virus doesn't want you to have any tools that would detect
it...

J Lopez,

Its more than likely that your Hosts file contains www.symantec.com pointing at 127.0.0.1.
Remove these entries & just leave LOCALHOST pointing to 127.0.0.1

Run a more thorough check for hijackware and (Rbot/SDbot) Trojans, including
posting your hijackthis log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Until he doesn't restore a clean "hosts" file manually, he will not be
able to update his virus scan software.
