IE7 and HP Director

Among Internet browsers, my preference is for Opera (9.63) or Firefox
(3.06). However, I am forced to use Microsoft's IE for some purposes.
Because of the past adverse reports in this forum about IE7, I had
refrained from installing it, and continued to use IE6. More recently,
I hadn't seen complaints about IE7, and thinking that MS might have
solved the problems, went ahead and upgraded to IE7 a couple of days
ago. "HP Director" on my computer immediately stopped working! Now I
have gone back to IE6 by uninstalling IE7.
I did read about some "workarounds" and about updated HP software that
would solve the problem, but am reluctant to reinstall IE7, fearing it
might also have problems other than the one with HP Director. Also, I
am not quite sure whether the updated HP software will really solve
the HP Director (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software8/COL17377/
oj-46104-1/CIT207355-HPCOM-PATCH-v8.exe)
I shall be thankful for info and advice on the above subject.

Have you checked in at Windows Updates after installing IE7? There was a
problem with the HP Director, but that was fixed so long ago I deleted from
my *canned* replies what was a workaround way back then. If you are fully
patched, you shouldn't have a problem now.

Have you tried this http://softflare.com/index.php?id=73?

I know it is fashionable to blame MS for all problems but the problem here
does not appear to be the fault of MS.

My thanks to all who have taken the trouble to reply. My response to
the suggestions are as follows.
Windows-XP Pro, SP3, on my computer is up to date. After IE7 was
installed (and before removal) Automatic Update notified me of some
“high-priority” and “security” updates which I duly downloaded and
installed. These updates were not relevant to the HP-Director problem.
“HP Update” is set to run automatically on my computer. I also run it
manually at least once a week, or more often. It did not detect any
updates.
Google took me to the HP web site:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...iesId=297429&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=228,
which has a “work around”(apparently the one referred to by Bruce
Hagen) as well as a “patch” which I downloaded:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software8/COL17377/oj-46104-1/CIT207355-HPCOM-PATCH-v8.exe
.. However, I did not run the patch, not being sure the problem was
restricted to “HP Director”. For example: I have set up Microsoft Word
as the HTML Editor, and Excel, Frontpage and Notepad can also be used.
I could not see the “Edit with…” button in the IE7 toolbar.
Therefore, I’m not particularly eager to install IE7 and then be
forced to do a lot of other things, because I am managing well enough
with IE6, Firefox, and Opera. I use IE6 only when the other two fail
to do the job.
Thanks again for the replies, especially to MVPs Bruce Hagen and PA
Bear.
