can ping but not browse

My Dial Up Networking cannot get web pages using web browser (IE 6), but I can ping my ISP's DNS just fine, and I can ping generic web pages (ie www.google.com). I'm trying to transition to a new dial-up ISP. Using windows dial-up connection icon, the new ISP connects; I can ping as said before, but now web pages via IE 6. The old ISP is more rigid in that it will not authenticate me and disconnects. I've uninstalled and re-installed the TCP/IP protocol, but still the same.

From a command prompt;
ipconfig /all
and compare the result with what your ISP thinks you should have.

I have seen this with DSL installs. I could ping anyplace
on the net but no address translation. Changed the the DNS
server to 199.166.24.253 per an article I found on
Microsoft'e web site. Everything worked great.

Thank you for your suggestion. It helped some what. Now I can get "timed out" responses from numerical IP addresses rather than no responses. What can I do to repair the OS ? I tried using my Win2kpro CDROM repair method, but it only got me to the DOS prompt with few to no viable diagnostic command choices. The repair process had a 2nd choice of doing the "Emergency Repair". Should I go for that ? I tried calling Microsoft for help - briefly saying - What a bad joke ! I'm getting fed up with this because I'm paying for internet access (and getting none effectively), and my anti virus subscription is being used up. Should I get drastic and reinstall OS ? Please somebody help !

Thank you Dave Patrick for responding. I have checked and gone over all the settings with my ISP's drone tech support, off-and-on for two months now. I can give you the specifics of them if you like. They suggested, and I did, uninstall and re-install the TCP/IP protocol. It got better in that I could ping IP addresses, but still no web browsing with IE6 or Netscape 6. I used my MS Win2kPro CDROM to do a "Repair OS", but it just got me to the DOS prompt with no commands that I know to diagnose for any corruption or non-functioning of TCP/IP, DNS, or DUN. Should I try the second option of doing the "Emergency Repair" ? Ever since doing the "Repair OS", the OS starts up in the blue Win2k Setup Screen. If I'm quick, I can choose the option of booting normal when the OS starts up, and it boots normal. Can I reset the default choice back to booting normal and set the time-to-choose longer ?

You can remove the option from boot.ini located in the root of the system
partition.
