I've modified my web pages as suggested. If you think that the
explanation can be improved, let me know.

You might want to mention that Mainline or BitComet can also be used to
download the file. See:

I just tried the 6 different approaches you listed. They all worked
fine here. That is, for each of the urls you proposed, Mozilla
"understood" it was dealing w/a torrent and passed it onto utorrent to
process. I'm running Mozilla 1.7.12 on Win2kSP4.

datapoint,

Thanks Craig. Mozilla 1.7.7 here. I may just chalk it up to Win XP
weirdness. . . ;) (Some things that worked just fine in Win 98
*sometimes* work since I "upgraded" - sometimes don't.)

Nice. :)

I see 6 seeders ATM and 5 peers (who may actually be seeders too) so it
looks like the torrent is good to go for now. Monitoring the download
occasionally (suggested in another post) is a good idea. If you see only
one or two seeders a post to ACF asking for more help should rectify
that quickly.

I think we've reached the period where you evaluate - ask questions if
you have them etc. etc. etc. When you're somewhere close to ready to
release the next version of Calendar Magic you can let us know if you
would like to continue the experiment.

Susan Bugher - 22.03.2006 20:49 :

I have a drop or two of that myself. :) Okay - to get us off to a quick
start I've created and uploaded a torrent file here temporarily:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ftp/calmag160.zip.torrent

Directions for downloading are almost same as for the PL2006 ISO (just a
different URL for the torrent file):

1. download µTorrent http://www.utorrent.com
2. No installation is required. Put the file where you want it and start
it running.
3. In the file menu select "add torrent from URL"
4. paste this URL into the URL box:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ftp/calmag160.zip.torrent
5. It may be several minute before uTorrent finds the download - be
patient.

Susan

I catched your offer with calmag160.zip.torrent to learn a bit how to
work with Torrent.

All went well, but:

1. the download of the 2MB calmag160.zip via uTorrent needed
unacceptable ~ 14 minutes with a average of only ~ 10KB/s

(so a second big download of a 450MB file needed over 12h!)

The button in the statusline always show yellow instead of green :(

I tried everything (shot down my Kaspersky AV/firewall inclusive) but
the speed stood slow further

With such a behavior I can not use Torrents further.

2. How can/must I create a .torrent with uTorrent if I want to
uTorrent-offer one of my own files? Which URL I have to insert? (I have
no own URL/Homepage).

Any hints? THX in advance for any assistence working with uTorrent.

My system: Windows HE SP1, Netscape/Mozilla-Browser, Kaspersky Internet
Security 6, uTorrent 1.5

Your download speed is mostly limited by the upload speeds of the peers
sharing with you. My upload speed is capped by my ISP at 30KB/s, and by
default uTorrent allows for 6 upload slots - so that's potentially only
5KB/s per slot I can offer.

Download speeds for me are quite variable - sometimes just a trickle of
incoming. But last week I had a torrent coming in at about 97KB/s as more
peers with fast connections joined in. I'm a novice at this, but there
seem to be good days and not so good days. You're dependent on your peers
and sometimes you hit a goldmine!

So far this month I've used uTorrent to download about 110 gigabytes (and
all legal by the way!).

Perseverence recommended.

There are two kinds of torrent files. The PL2006 ISO and Calendar Magic
torrent files are *trackerless* torrents. You do NOT insert a URL into a
trackerless torrent. When uTorrent says "Please enter a valid tracker
URL. Do you want to continue without having any trackers?" click on the
"yes" button and then save the torrent file.

A trackerless torrent file can be uploaded to *any* web site or
*emailed* to others. Once someone has the torrent file uTorrent can find
the download (if it's available) Trackerless torrents use distributed
hash tables to locate the downloads. See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_hash_table

Distributed hash tables (DHTs) are a class of decentralized distributed
systems that partition ownership of a set of keys among participating
nodes, and can efficiently route messages to the unique owner of any
given key.

A torrent *with* a tracker has to be uploaded to a web site that has a
tracker. uTorrent needs the URL for the tracker when you create a
torrent with a tracker.

http://dessent.net/btfaq/#utils

tracker
A server on the Internet that acts to coordinate the action of
BitTorrent clients. When you open a torrent, your machine contacts the
tracker and asks for a list of peers to contact. Periodically throughout
the transfer, your machine will check in with the tracker, telling it
how much you've downloaded and uploaded, how much you have left before
finishing, and the state you're in (starting, finished download,
stopping.) If a tracker is down and you try to open a torrent, you will
be unable to connect.
My system: Windows HE SP1, Netscape/Mozilla-Browser, Kaspersky Internet

I'm still using uTorrent 1.3 (going to update any minute now). . . :)

Been seeding (almost) continuously for what ? 4 days.

Oh wow, 9.5 Mb uploaded 4.66 ratio.
Over the weekend Pl2006 took about 1.3 Gb,

Well, I suppose 'tis early days and thats 2 meg a day ,60 meg
a month , with 4 seeders that equals the authors ISP allowance
which could be useful to them, although its only about 50c a month
not worth the setup overheads unless it is a freebie extra.

I wouldn't have much problem with leaving a couple of dozen such seeding,
but it isn't going to be easy to manage if hundreds want to use it,
easier to seed a 6-pack of similar classed apps.

I just don't think most downloaders would actually care to take the extra
trouble for small downloads.

Hey, I just ran the application, seems quite nice , I may use it :)
once (doh!) setting the locality ( wot? no auto detect :) )
'what time is it in?' font clipping in the current time
12:15 AM , 'AM is just half an 'A'
also reminders by month, add reminders, et al

XP home
1024x768 32bit normal 96dpi fonts
same for 800x600
and 1600x1280

I've seeded intermittently (dial-up connection) - 15.4 MB uploaded to

If ACF participants decide to make this an ongoing project we might want
to seed only for Pricelessware authors who request it (a little perk for
our favorite authors). :)

dunno. . . that may depend on the choices that are offered. I'd rather
download from a torrent than use a link that redirects to Tucows/
Simtel/ download.com etc. etc. IMO *if* people try using uTorrent most
of them will like the process - IOW - I think the number of people
downloading Calendar Magic via the torrent will grow over time if Alex
continues to offer a torrent download.

FWIW as a data point. . . Opera offers torrent downloads and their
files are fairly small too (v 8.52 for Windows is 3692 KB).
http://www.opera.com/download/torrents/

AFAICT the Calendar Magic torrent is being seeded constantly by ACF
volunteers - IOW so far so good. . . If any other PW authors want to
give this a try please post.

Hi Terry,

Thanks for pointing this out. I should have allowed for users who like a
12-hour clock plus AM or PM.

I'll make the current time boxes wider in the next release. If you need
a corrected version before then, let me know.

hmm, I am in South Australia at the end of long piece of
wet string, it may be selecting against huge latency

I think the explanation may be simple - I was one of the *first* seeders
- IIRC most of that upload was on the first day.

I connected instantly, download looked fine. I've deleted the folder so
others will connect to you rather than me. . .
utorrent is a fairly shallow learning curve
and it has to be available to educate, so I expect I will seed it for
a while, 4 weeks , or more , or until it has 1000 permanently seeding :)

Thank you kind sir. :)
I wonder if utorrent uses a torrent to update ? :)

AFAIK they're not using one - yet. :)
