Bookmarks Favorites, append vs. export?

B

Bob

OS: Win98SE. IE 6

I often backup my IE favorites file (bookmark.htm). This overwrites older
files.
Many times I need to append to the latest file, rather than overwrite it.

Example: I have a stand alone, backup of my "Favorites."
IE has crashed and some of my my favorites are lost, but some are still
there.

I need to bring the backup into IE,. Have it combine under the correct
headings (if there are any), the archived "bookmark.htm" file information,
without destroying what still exists as "favorites" in IE.

I know I can use an HTML editor to open the bookmark.htm file, then open the
Favorites folder and copy and paste, by hand, into either the Favorites
folder
or into the .htm file, to make a new Favorites or new bookmark.htm.

However, with many bookmarks, copying and pasting, can take several hours.

Import/export only gives me the option to overwrite. -not append.

I tried setting the properties of one or the other files/folders properties
to read-only
so that when executed, export/import would not overwrite, but that did not
solve
the problem.

Is there an easier way (and where do I find it) to append, other than doing
a manual, copy and paste?

Suggestions are welcome.

Thank you,
Bob T.

If you're sure that the bookmark.htm backup contains duplicates of the remaining
Favorites, simple delete all existing IE Favorites and then import your backup.

If the remaining list of Favorites is large, you can easily delete them using
Windows Explorer.

it usually asks me on IMPORT what to do for similar named entries.
for safety, just make another copy of what exists, them import the older file. then check and see if the results are what you need.

I don't quite follow your terminology and I don't see why you have to
copy and paste anything.

If you are exporting favorites and don't want to overwrite
bookmark.htm, then chose another name. You don't have to use the
default name of bookmark.htm and you can create as many backups as you
like with Export.

If you are Importing, then the import does not overwrite the Favorites
folder. It merges the urls in the import file with the favorites in
the Favorites folder. If that is not what you want, then import into a
temporary folder in the favorites and manipulate from there using
Explorer on the Favorites folder.
