Blocked Outlook attachments

Hi,

We are testing Outlook 2007 at work, and one of our coworkers sent an
attachment which was a shortcut to a shared folder. I believe the extension
is .xnk. Unfortunately, Outlook blocked the attachment. I saw in a previous
post a URL C:\Users\nmara1\Desktop\Blocked Attachments HowTo-Outlook.mht
with directions on how to do a regedit to resolve similar issues. I was
hoping that there was an easier way to do this without a registry hack.
Another article stated that only and administrator could resolve this issue.
If anyone could clarify, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks Sue,

Unfortunately in Vista the File types option is no longer available similar
to previous versions. I have looked online and unable to find the new way to
create a new extension.

I was able to modify the registry to allow the XNK attachment, save it to my
documents and then drag it to my shortcut pane, however I got the following
message when trying to open the new shortcut: The command line argument is
not valid. Verfiy the switch you are using.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sue here is the entry I added followed by the instructions to add a new
string Value
-[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security]

Go to Edit-> New-> String Value and name the value Level1Remove (case
sensitive!)
Double-click on the newly created value and enter the extension including
the "dot" that you want to open in Outlook. For instance .xnk

If you need to enter more than one extension you'll have to type separate
them by a semicolon like this; .exe;.bat;.url

Press OK on the input box and close the registry editor

If you want I can provide the reg file, I just was not sure how to attach it
to this thread.

The Level1Remove registry value is not relevant to your issue. Unfortunately, since Vista doesn't allow access to the detailed file type settings, you can't make the change detailed in the article I suggested unless you want to try setting it on a Windows XP machine and exporting the reg file for the key(s) that have the file type settings for xnk -- I have no idea if that will work in Vista. If you have a support contract with Microsoft or are using a retail version, you might want to file an incident to see if there are other options.
