Beware of Upgrading Your Computer

Guest

That is what I am going to do - remove it from my old machine and install on
the new machine. I will only be operating the one copy I bought on one
computer. The problem is how do I prove to Microsoft that I have done this
so they will let me authenticate it on the new machine. I am sympathetic to
Microsofts problem and accept that everyone has a right to make a living and
I want to comply with the rules but this has been nerve wracking.

I have the update, and newsgroups continue to work fine on
Windows Mail.

Format the old machine. Call them and tell them you formatted it.

Trying Linux is a little more than booting up a LiveCD and running Firefox.
I know, it gave you some sense of accomplishment. But really ... there
really is much more to Linux than just that. <snort>

The only distro I ever tried on LiveCD was Xandros 4.0. Otherwise of
late I've installed Mandriva 2007 Powerpack.
Over the years I've tried a maybe 8-10 distros, all installed.
At first it's fun and different, then it becomes like a hobby and pretty
soon it's a full blown job.
At that point I usually leave it along cause I need to be productive. By
that I mean I need to make real money and I do that with Windows and all
the apps installed that I want and need.
My experience with linux is probably typical.
I see that you and the rest of the linux fan boys are real linux
fanatics. It owns you guys for whatever reason(s). That's your problem
not mine. I don't understand the mind set or motivation that compels you
guys to post your linux taunts in this MS ng. If linux cost money and
you were selling it I'd understand. But seeing as how linux it free,
points to some other phobia or affliction or aggravation as your
motivation. I must say, you guys are certainly an unhappy group of fanatics.
Anyway, I'm quite happy with MS and all of the other software from other
companies that will run on MS OS's.
They put food on my table and money in my pocket.

Hmmm I've had nothing but luck in dealing with the activation people. I've
had to re-do peoples PC before whom already activated Retail Vista and a few
of them had all new part (except for the HD).

Anyway I was basicly given 3 questions...

1. Have you activated this copy of Vista before? Answer YES
2. Why are you activating this again? Answer: Computer crashed and had to
build a new one
3. Are you running this version of Vista on any other Machines? Answer:
NOPE just this one.

....OK here is your activation code.........

Simple as that. At least for me.

one day ?

WRONG! 99% of the time people are blamed for not doing research when
they come to this NG and "RIP VISTA A NEW ONE" when the plain simple
fact of the mater is they clearly had poor drivers.

Frank id not RIP LINUX A NEW ONE.

Apples and oranges buddy.

There might have been a whole lot of rippin' giong on if Frank was a
student, or half of a young couple, or a single parent, and just spent $400
on a full retail copy of 'Ubuntu Ultimate'.

So I guess it is Apples and Oranges, one is free, and one could be a full
weeks pay (or more) for someone else.

Why (when someone desperately needs to attempt to prove a point) do people
only use Ultimate as an example? If someone bought ultimate but could not
afford it then shame on them. Otherwise Vista costs the same as XP.

Proly what happened and is the main reason many try it but few keep it.

Let the numbers (4-7% desktop usage) speak for themselves.
The masses have decided, based on percentage of usage, that obviously
linux is not that easy to use.
Especially given the fact that linux disrtos are free and the masses
don't seem all that interested or they (like me) have tried it and have
no use for it.

The masses like to be controlled. The 4-7% like to control themselves.

Once Frankie decided to move on beyond running a web browser the task became
too daunting. By now you should realize that Frankie is just a disturbed
kid. <snort><fart><snort>

Currently, at NewEgg:

Vista Home Premium = $220
XP Home w/SP2 = $190

Vista Home Premium OEM = $112
XP Home w/SP2 OEM = $90

If that was an OEM version of Vista, you did an upgrade... you did not built
a new machine.
An OEM version is ONLY good for the original box, it may NEVER be
transferred to a new computer.

Yeah I can see that by all of the "i need help" postings in the linux ng's.
Literally thousands of them. Proly at least one for each linux loser.
Sure, they're in control...sure they are.

The masses have not spoken or decided anything, as they probably have no
idea that there are viable options other than maybe knowing about apple.
Being available for free is not, in and of itself, of any importance if
no one knows about it in the first place. It is too bad that you gave up
on it so quickly, because doing so does nothing to lend any credence to
your low opinion of it. It is fine that you have no use for it, but
don't pretend that you did any more than kick the tires and then made a
decision on that act only.

You are correct. His experience does not define that. Reality defines

And who's reality are we discussing? Frank's, yours, mine? None of them
define in any way as to whether something is for the masses.

No one denies that switching from Windows to Linux has a learning curve.
The fact that so many are asking questions on the Linux forums only
indicates how many people are fed up with Windows. The word "newbie" is
used a lot on those forums nowadays.

Did Nero see Rome fall? Will Bill?
