AVG update problem

Chrisssssss.........

Last night I installed a new Epson printer. The instructions told me to stop
any antivirus prog running before installing the printer software. I did
this using msconfig. I then set AVG running again afterwards.
Now every time I try to update AVG, the AVG site tells me there is a
priority update but when I click to download, the "progress meter" window
states "Closing connection".
Also the little AVG icon in the bottom right of the screen is GREY and not
coloured as it should be.
Can anyone offer any advice.
Thanks, Chrissss.......

Sorry but it appears that AVG had a problem at their end.

It's nothing to do with your printer -- I've had that problem for a
couple of days now and I didn't change any configurations of
anything, nor have I stopped AVG manually.

Try connecting your browser to http://free.grisoft.com and you'll
see that the server is down. Whether they've abruptly withdrawn
support for the free product, or this is temporary, I don't know.

dangerous programs such as "viruses," "worms," "Trojan horses,"
and "licensed Microsoft software" that can take over your
computer and render it useless. --Dave Barry

don't worry....AVG is a very buggy program..and the update servers (for
sure if you use the free program) are often very busy.
I would de-instyall it...and then clean your register..reboot and
re-install it IF you want to have AVG again on your PC as AV protection.

With all respect but I would suggest you would start to use another AV
program;for sure if you are a "heavy user"like p2p,chatting,software
downloading or networking.
AVG is NOT top shelf...IMHO...in fact it's FAR from that. I would call
it "LOUSY".

The German Antivir is far much better and less buggy.(even the free
version) However in the free version you also have the problem of busy
update servers (and no email scanner).
here is an english site for you:

http://www.free-av.com/

Top-Shelp is:
1) Kaspersky
2) Gdata (uses both KAV and Bitdefender!)
3) Bitdefender
4)NOD32
5)F-Secure
6) Avast! 4.6 pro version
7) Panda
8) Trend Micro.

You don't REALY need an email scanner actualy. If your on-access scanner
is any good (that is NOT AVG,Dr.Web,Vcatch or any other useless shit!!)
it will ring the alarm bell asap if you open an attachement in your email.

Your problems seem to be isolated as through this period AVG free has been
updating and working fine for me and others.

FUD campaign to me.

Same "problem" for me here in Aust, server times out or downloads only 75%
of the file (last two days)

If you google on these matters you'll find enough material. besides if
you read your (serious)magazines...and read some serious sites you know
i am correct.
I don't waiste my time posting sites which are well known about
this.Even in this newsgroup there was not too long ago a discusion about
this...so DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!

But here are a few if you insist.
http://www.av-test.org/

http://agn-www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/vtc/

I am sure you can find a dozen more....

readthem and you'll find out that the statements i made were genuine.AVG
(with some others) is crap. If you realy are a pro user...please stay
away from this AV software. Sure if you get 3 emails in a week and don't
use p2p it's an option...but like i said for heavy users it's CRAP.

Btw...I don't know what a "FUD"is.....but i can tell you i have no
comercial intrest whatsoever in doing this newgroup. Neither i am
getting paid by an AV software manufactorer.

Software should be free...and certainly AV software to protect your comp.

Major German FUD site! Or should it be called the old FUDdy duddy site!

Name Date English German
Market overview 2002-07-29 XLS (35 KB) XLS (35 KB)
Market overview 2002-07-29 ZIP (8 KB) ZIP (8 KB)

As you will notice, the information is majorly out of date.

Six months out of date information!
I am sure you can find a dozen more....

Probably German that have the mentality "If it ain't German then it ain't
good!"
readthem and you'll find out that the statements i made were
genuine.AVG (with some others) is crap.

With your head in the position it is then all you can see is this. Can you
whistle "Blowing in the wind" while chewing bubble gum?
If you realy are a pro user...

I hear that Germany has some very good Red Light districts but Amsterdam's
districts are better.
Not speaking from personal experience though.

I doubt if the University of Hamburg is a "FUD" site...but if YOU say
so......
if you took the trouble to READ (if you can...)the site you would know
the research done there is very profesional and FAR from being FUD...

just keep on using your rubbish RAM-eating-slow-on-updates-AV(G) or what
ever micky-mouse AV software it is you're using...and all will be good;-)

LOL

OO I was in the red light district in Amsterdam...and it's far being
overrated. You should try the redzone in Antwerp......hahahahahahah

God Bless America and Mr. Bush:)

PS: don't come whinning to me if you catch the next best trojan...worm

I have never atteneded it but it seams to have a good reputation in
academics but definitly not in computer security.

I can read English very well as it is my first language and graduated from
university with honours in English literature and grammer.
I was a contributing editor for several IBM International Technical Support
Centre Redbooks.

As it apears you are from the Netherlands and probably the French area you
will have a very poor command of the English language as it is indoctrinated
in you that the English are stupid imbiciles not worthy of decent rational
debates.

I will continue using AVG Free!

Show me proof that AVG (any version) is a RAM-eating-slow-on-updates.
The reason updates are slow to download is the popularity of the program.

Lots Of Love for you as well. :)

I missed the redzone in Antwerp as I was with my wife and daughter but we
did enjoy the Rubens art galery and the excellent "moules
avec frites."
We really enjoyed the Grand Place in Brussels. We were in Brussels for a
week while I taught a course at the IBM Europe education center in La Hulpe
(Ter Hulpen.)
God Bless America and Mr. Bush:)

That's good for the Americans but I am Canadian. The people that liberated
and fed your parents.

Maybe the long diet of tulip bulbs has damaged your family's DNA and you can
only reason at the level of a pre-pubecent tulip bulb.

I have not caught a trojan, virus nor worm in over 8 years of being on the
Internet with the last 5 years being on high speed access.

No honours for spelling? Or is "grammer" the 'Kings English version of
"grammar"? :))

I never said I got an honours degree in spelling. That's what spell
checkers are for.

I guess I'll have to look for a spell checker for IE. :)

Apart from grammer, there's also apears and imbiciles. That's almost
sugienesque. If you must blab about your command of the English
Language then for heaven's sake check it for errors or you'll look
like an ass.

Hmm, minor mistake?
Netherlands has NO French area.
Maybe you are confusing Belgium and Netherlands.
(and NO, Kopenhagen is not our capital!)

And please do not attribute the prejudices of a single person
to an indoctrination that does not exist.
(I allways assumed that also Canadians know better.)
