AVG 8 on XP Will not Update

T

thanatoid

Running XP
AVG is not updating. Ever since July 4th it says the virus
and spyware databases are out of date - last updated July
4. I open it up, click update, it takes about a second and
tells me to reboot. I do, and it still barks saying it
needs to update. I can si there all day and let it reboot
- it will not update!

Uninstall and reinstall AVG?

If I have to reinstall, how can I do so and keep that
webpage scanner out? It slows down webpage loading
severely.

ESET NOD32 is better, and you can get it for 20 bucks (half what
ESET charges) from www.purplus.com.

They have daily updates, if not several daily.

Good alternatives are:

Avira AntiVir® Personal - FREE Antivirus
http://www.free-av.com/
You may wish to consider removing the 'AntiVir Nagscreen'
http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm
or
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition
It includes ANTI-SPYWARE protection, certified by the West Coast Labs
Checkmark process, and ANTI-ROOTKIT DETECTION based on the best-in class
GMER technology.
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
(Choose Custom Installation and under Resident
Protection, uncheck: Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange.)

Justin,

Do the reinstall. I am using it on 7 XP machines with NO problems
what-so-ever.

Don't worry about the webpage scanner. Turn it off in the IE or Firefox
add-ins. You won't be bothered with it slowing things down after you do.

If you download the latest executable from the avg website, and choose
custom install, you get to stop completely all that webpage/toolvar scanner
shit from installing. Makes it much better.

the problem with not choosing to install the web thing is it keeps
barking at me to either install it or screw with it.

What I meant was to let the webpage scanner install when you install AVG.
Then go to Add-ons in IE7 or Firefox and disable it. That way you don't get
any nags and you don't have the problem with the slowness.

Or, as i said, download a newer install file from avg website, and choose
not to install webpage scanner, it will not mention it again.
