AVG doesn't appear to update

Ed

I'm running AVG Free Edition Version 7.0.300 on an Win XP platform.

However when I update, it appears to be successful in that the Control
Center tells me that I have the latest database (i.e. 265.7.0 released
on 17/01/05), but the Internal Virus Database window itself is coloured
red and tells me that I need to do an update.

So, I update again, but it makes no difference.

Can anyone please help me resolve this problem.

Thanks,
Yours truly,
Ed

Check your system date.

What's wrong with his system date?

Nothing on the post, but he might be referring to a different machine.
Where the wrong date would make it "think" it needed an update.

Let me clarify two things.

Firstly, the date time of the affected PC is absolutely correct.

Secondly, the affected PC is my daughter's and not the one I myself am
using to post these messages.

So, with the date/time being correct, what is the next thing to check out?

Yours truly,
Ed

I was having trouble updating, too. My trouble was my tray icon was
grey and said I needed an update. When I would try to update, it would
find an update but when I'd try to d/l it, it wouldn't. It would say
to check my internet connection and I would have to manually d/l the
..bin file (yes, it was allowed on my firewall. even turned it off...)

Then for a week, it would update from the web just fine. Yesterday,
it did that again. I deleted it and installed Avast! instead. Guess
I'll see how that goes. Never had any troubles with AVG 6 but 7 has
been nothing but a pain, on all 3 pcs it's installed on. Sent one of
my pcs into a continuous reboot. Had to boot into safe mode, uninstall
and do a clean install, instead of the "web update" they sent me
to.....

I just had a similar situation with AVG on another computer. Each time
I said to update, the update screen appeared, but nothing seemed to
happen--it said something about "...completed..." Finally, I just left
it in that state, and did not cancel. I came back a few minutes later,
and it was downloading the new virus file. This updated in the usual
way, the colors returned to the system tray icon, and the AVG Control
Center shows that I have a recent virus file.

I do not know the cause of the problem, it might be some slight error in
the virus pattern file, but patience seems to be the solution.

Euan, you are right on the button!!! The system date/time IS indeed
playing up. I have been monitoring it since your post and found that it
is erratic. Some days it shows the correct date, whilst on other days
it is way behind. No wonder AVG has a problem! Now I'll have to go and
sort the date/time out.

But now I just want to thank you for your accurate diagnosis of the
problem. You really have helped enormously. Thanks.

There's a battery on the motherboard that maintains the system
clock when the system is powered down - might be worth checking it.
It is usually a 'silver' coin shaped cell that gives a nominal 3.0v
output. Replace it of it's reading less that about 2.7v.

This problem still exists as of today ( 2005 02 02)
I've started posting updates over in
ALT.BINARIES.WAREZ.IBM-PC
I can't post the updates here because this newsgroup doesn't allow
binary attachments.
I posted a message to this effect on the AVG Free-Forum but apparently
it wasn't cleared for posting.

You can do a "manual" update IF you can get through the servers to the
update file.

I've provided links in my messages to the correct AVG pages, both the
Forum and the Update.
