AVG - still free or another ?

I was asked by a senior couple for an anti virus program - they cant afford
commercial rates - I went to the AVG site but it doesn't appear to be free
any longer or am I missing something ?
Any other recommendations ?

avg is still free. but since grisoft.com redesigned their site, they
gave their free product a new location:

Yup, you're missing something.
Go to http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php
and look down the lefthand side of the page for 'AVG Free Edition' (its
version 6) and follow the links through.
I used version 6 for ages and was content with it until I tried Avast (free
version), which I like better. You'll find lots of differing opinions.

Other - yes, AntiVir Personal edition from www.free-av.com. IMHO
better than AVG, and particularly so if the senior couple is
inexperienced computer wise, in that removal can be (is by default -
if memory serves) automated with Antivir, not so with the free AVG
edition.

Doesn't this take ages to update on dialup, like it downloads the entire program
when there's a new update?

I switched to Avast from AVG several months ago when AVG let a virus
through and then was unable to "heal" it. Avast has never let me down,
updates automatically, and is in my opinion a far superior free anti-virus
program.

I would have to agree with you. I did the same thing here many months
ago and have not been sorry. Avast is very good...

I use AVG along with Zone Alarm. There is *no* a/v program that will
catch everything, that's why it's good to have some redundancy with more
than one. CYA.

It only downloads the whole program when there is a new release.
Most of the time it only downloads the virus definition file (which is
still rather large on dial-up, I guess).

I used Zone Alarm along with AVG and now continue to use Zone Alarm with
Avast.

I agree.
In the past I've used AVG, antivir & others that now I don't remeber:
Avast works very well, I forget to have it except when has updated (a
tray message for 1 second) and when find a virus in downloaded file (2
days ago :-/).
I use also BitCommander for manual scanning (better two heads than
one!).

Not really. Even on my old beast 56k modem I get an update in about a
minute.
