OT: AVG questions

I'm running Windows95. I've just downloaded free AVG v.7.1
[antivirus] from http://free.grisoft.com
According to the documentation I must install IE5.01 or greater
in order to use AVG. I have some questions:
1. my default browser is Netscape 4.7. Will AVG work with it?
2. will AVG change my default browser to IE?
3. Why is it necessary to install IE 5.x?
4. Will there be any conflict using Zone Alarm 2.6X that
cannot be easily fixed/resolved? (the AVG documentation
doesn't mention anything about the free versions of ZA
although it devotes a few pages to ZA Pro.)

p.s. I had been using Avast4. Two week's ago I had to reformat
my HD and reinstall Windows and all my other programs. When I
installed Avast I started to get a lot of error messages - missing
dlls etc. I downloaded and installed the proper dlls but avast
still didn't work. I reformated my HD, reinstalled windows,
installed everything but Avast and now my machine is up and

I'm running Windows95.

I'm using Windows XP Home SP2.

I have had no trouble with AVG, using Firefox 1.5.0.2 as my default browser.

2. will AVG change my default browser to IE?

It didn't on my computer.

3. Why is it necessary to install IE 5.x?

Don't know. Perhaps IE5 provides a functionality to the OS that isn't
present in IE 4 or lower.

4. Will there be any conflict using Zone Alarm 2.6X that
cannot be easily fixed/resolved? (the AVG documentation
doesn't mention anything about the free versions of ZA
although it devotes a few pages to ZA Pro.)

I never had a problem with ZoneAlarm 5 or 6.

I've not known any ZA/AVG compatibility problems on 98. I didnt think
ZA would run on 95. Getting AVs to work on 95 does seem to be issue
filled though, and I cant say I've come up with any decent solution.
Its such an old OS that it seems no modern AV supports it, at least not
any that can detect 100% of ITW viruses. Ones that cant do that are of
much less use, since theyre wide open to some itw viri.

Also I would google '98 lite' before installing IE 4 or 5 on 95, IIRC
theyre much fatter than 95's IE3, and do grim things to performance.

Cant be many people running 95 these days, though it still lurks here
and there.

I've not known any ZA/AVG compatibility problems on 98. I didnt think
ZA would run on 95. Its such an old OS that it seems no modern AV
supports it.

I also use f-prot for dos.

I'm still using it until I get a new machine.
Then I'll be moving over to Linux.

I've been running ZA2.x and 3.x on my Win95 machine without
problems. I just installed IE5.0 although I don't use it cause
some programs demand it. I don't like IE - never have-
and continue to use Netscape. Because of some problems recently with
Avast, I've been thinking of getting AVG. I think that my problems
were not with AVG, but with a bad installation of 95. Since my last
reinstallation a few day's ago, everything is working well. I might
reinstall Avast 'cause I don't want to install IE5.01; (I like
Avast even though it uses a lot of system resources.) I'll look at
